Toronto FC - The Pinocchio of MLS

Ben Knight wrote this back in September when the grass at BMO process was reaching a crescendo, and I just haven't commented on it until now. Anyway, enjoy the tale of the wooden boy who dreamed to be real, also known as Toronto FC.

Just as Pinocchio dreamed of becoming a real boy, Toronto has dreamed of being a real soccer city. It was so hopeless for so long. No team, no stadium, no chance, no hope.
. . .
Toronto FC still has some Pinocchio strings, in the form of MLS’s tight salary cap and roster restrictions. But there’s hope there, too. The league CBA is up for renegotiation. A higher number and a second designated player would do a nice job of further trimming back the puppet strings.

I guess that makes Don Garber the Master of Puppets.

Look, I know that at the end of the story Pinocchio ends up with a new suit, fat stacks, and an immortal creator, but this is precisely why it's a fairy tale.

Truth be told, I take away two things from this post. One, we all suspected TFC of being a plastic team with plastic fans, and now we know it to be true because Ben Knight told us. Second, there's no better place for a fake coach than a fake league. No wonder I'm baller.

I don't get it. Are you trying to be funny or am i missing something? Or is the humor the fact that you dug up a 3month old blog post in a douchey attempt to make fun of TFC?

Personally, I find Knight's equation of TFC as a puppet who's strings are pulled by MLS to be funny/sad. Likewise the implication that has for the rest of the league. If only MLS would release the shackles!

I don't think *I* was trying to be funny here. But sarcastic and douchey, yeah probably. Hang out here a while, you'll figure it out.

As for being late, guilty as charged. I'd flagged it long ago, and quite honestly, thought writing about it to be moderately more interesting than being the 1000th blogger to comment on Donavon going to Everton. Your mileage may vary.

I find it comical that Toronto fans have spend so much time and efffort screaming about how MLS is holding themback by not letting them have two DPs.

First of all, the team has been around for three years but didn't ever sign their first one until this summer.

Secondly, TFC - or anyone else - can indeed have a second DP. All they have to do is trade for the spot, like New York did.

All the whining up there boils down to one thing: other organizations find ways to succeed under the current rules, but theirs can't, so it must be MLS' fault.

What a bunch of assholes.

I like (maybe too strong a word) Preki and all, but it's got to be worrying to the fans up there how that team has systematically pissed away all its allocations and expansion benefits and ended up with a very threadbare roster. Was I the only one who was thought Philadelphia would be insane to pick Guevara in the draft?
