Guillermo Barros Schelotto on his way out of Columbus?

2009-11-17 04:46:00

According to Goff, the Crew want him to take a massive pay cut:

In a meeting this week, the Crew told the 2008 MLS most valuable player that, in order to remain with the club, he would have to agree to cut his salary by at least 50 percent, the Insider has learned. The decision was apparently made by upper management.

I think everyone knew he'd have to take a pay cut to stay, but it would be too bad if this is how he left considering all he did on the field for that team.

Edit: According to Sean Michelle, it's much worse, with Schelotto hot after being asked to take a 65% salary cut and ready to listen to other offers:

"There is a lot of time until the new season," Schelotto said. "But I am open to possibilities. Until today, the Columbus Crew had the option. But now I am waiting to talk to whomever. I am waiting for other offers. My intention was to stay here but we are very far apart."

A 65 percent pay cut would drop his base salary to $227,500.
...
"Maybe I am a little -- not angry -- but surprised," Schelotto said. "Maybe I will analyze this offer from Columbus when I get cool."

I'll have more on this later.
