UVA beats Akron for Men's NCAA College Cup on PKs

2009-12-13 05:00:00

Akron came up a little short today. I only caught the second half, but I was very impressed by Akron's skill in the face of a very organized UVA defense. UVA always had men running at the ball, and only really got disorganized in the extra period. Neither team had what could be called gilt-edged chances, but in penalties UVA always looked more confident.

It'll be a long, sad ride home for the Zips, but I think they proved their quality in the face of a very skeptical ACC. Akron truly belonged. Given time, the program will challenge for further honors, but everyone in Northeast Ohio is going to be waiting on Caleb Porter's decision to leave or stay.

All the teams in the Final Four were very close in ability. There weren't many goals, but it was a good show. A round of applause to all.
